I promise you have never seen anything quite like this.
Ayoko Kurokawa, the genius behind Kuroiwa Patisserie in Brooklyn, self-describes as a patissier, pastry sculptor and food stylist. You may think: why not just pastry chef? When you look at her oeuvre, you’ll see why. She’s worked at MoMA’s Modern and at the Plaza Hotel and while I’m sure she’s capable of delivering a high standard of recognizable-but-surprising dishes night after night, it’s clear there’s more for her to say artistically.
Kurokawa also dabbles in clay and having grown accustomed to that freedom, she works in both two and three dimensions, painting but also sculpting. The recipes and techniques are French classics, the expression is Japanese and American. From the online shop, you can order deceivingly simple delicious loaf cakes, tea cakes or custom portrait cookies. You can also commission specialty, one-of-a-kind cakes.
Happy hunting . . . Anne
